The Kids on the Block of San Diego (KOBSD)
are a group of nearly life-sized puppets representing children with a variety
of physical and learning disabilities, medical conditions and social problems.
The Kids on the Block look like real kids, are dressed in real kids clothes, and talk and act like real kids. They have problems they tackle everyday. Each puppet has his or her own charm which comes to life through a live puppeteer! Their credibility is reinforced by their realistic language and their real emotions. Children in the audience see them as real kids. The puppets speak out, in elementary schools and special programs, about what it's like to have a disability, be abused, or have other cultural and social challenges. While receiving accurate information about disabilities, social issues and diversity, the children in the audience are also encouraged to ask questions of the puppets. This exchange between children and puppets reinforces the unique and often humorous exchange of facts and feelings that is the essence of each performance.
Kids On the Block of San Diego addresses a wide range of issues that affect today's children. KOBSD has a strong commitment to providing the San Diego community with programs that address children's questions, concerns and needs about these issues. The type of education the Kids on the Block programs provide will help to create positive attitudinal and behavioral change for present and future generations. |
